Would You Recommend Having a Pomeranian With a Large Dog?

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Pomeranian!

My family has been considering getting a Pomeranian but we also have a 4 year old, 130 pound Leonberger. Is this a good or bad idea?
Yes, my Leonberger is really calm and loves small dogs, as long as they’re not too yappy. He gets along fine with most dogs.

what is your leonbergers personality like? has it been socialized, and around smaller dogs before? is it relatively calm, and not aggressive? only you can answer these questions. i have a 120 lb goldie, with a basset mix, and they get along great, but my goldie is a gentle giant, ya know? it really depends on the dog, and the owner as to it being a good or bad idea. good luck with your decision!

Well, it depends on whether or not your old dog would be nice to your new little dog. If you think he can handle it, then you should go for it!

We have a German Shepherd who’s best friend is our weenie dog. As long as the Leonberger is friends towards smaller dogs, then you should be fine. Its different having a small dog, and then bringing a big dog into the home. They are much more threatening looking that a small dog is to a big dog.

Hmm..depends on the temperament of the Leonberger. Pomeranians, at least mine(which are mini-poms), are good with other dogs. Though if you already had a pomeranian, and was getting another dog, then the pomeranian would most likely become very jealous.

I think if you get a pom, it should do well with another nice, nurturing dog. I don’t think it would be a bad idea for your dog to have a doggy companion :)
    Good luck!

Well I have a 2 1/2 year old chihuahua and i got a 6 week german shepherd the other day….The GSD wants to play with the chihuahua but i don’t think he likes that idea. Let’s put it this way, they don’t hate each other, but they don’t necessarily like each other.
Everyone tells me that it takes some getting used to.
My small dog is probably having pride issues though because he WAS the first one.
    I bet he’ll b fine though.

as long as you have room for the both of them and also the bigger dog since he is used to the house and being a part of it, he would need to get along with the little one because he could really hurt him/her. Its fine as long as they get along.

You would have to be careful that the big dog doesn’t hurt the little one even at play, my Irish Wolfhound always wants to put his large paw on top of my kitty and slide her across the floor. She is only playing but she doesn’t know how big and strong she is.

I had a Pomeranian that had "little dog attitude" toward big dogs, and my boyfriend had an Irish Setter that pawed at her when they where playing and almost ripped her eye out. I would not get a toy breed with a big dog. I ended up giving my Pom to my exhusband after my boyfriend and I moved in together so she would not get hurt again, it was hard but it was for the better and now I have border collies.

no, pomeranian’s don’t like other dogs, even big one’s! they mostly like other pomeranian’s. it would probaly go crazy near your dog. but i bet that your dog would like the pomeranian, but the pomeranian probaly would not like your dog.
