How Much Should a 4 Month Pomeranian Weigh?

My male Pomeranian will be 4 months on the 30th. He weighs 9 pounds already. My parents have a Pomeranian and it weighs that much full grown. And he’s already taller than my parents Pom. And he IS a purebreed Pom. Do I have a monster Pomeranian on my hands?
Yes, he is a full-blood, pure breed Pom.
And he’s not fat.. He’s tall and lean.

What do his parents weigh?

A Pomeranian should ideally weight 3-7 pounds at adulthood. At 4 months, a Pomeranian should not be 9 pounds. I would place a call to the breeder that you bought from and see if this is normal for their litters to be extremely large, then I would seriously consider never buying from them again.

I would think that the size of any puppy, would depend on the size of the mom and dad. Yes there is a standard size for a Pom, but that may not be the size your puppy turns out to be. Also, if you know you are not over feeding, just love the little bundle of joy for who he is.

A well bred pom would be at half their adult weight at 16wk/ 4mo. which adult weight is around 7 lb so 3,4 lb. Unless your puppy is a really fast early bloomer, you’re looking at closer to 16 – 20 lb grown.

The rule for small dogs is triple at 12wk or double at 16 wk for good estimate of adult weight. It is not 100% but fairly accurate for most dogs.

He is probably a pure bred pomeranian. He is just oversized for today’s standards. But remember, he is still very small in comparison to his ancestors and it is because of his ancestors that he is oversized. Poms used to weigh in at 30 to 35 lbs. Then they were bred down and there were two acceptable sizes, a "tiny" and all others (LOL) By then the pom standard was around 15 lbs. But breeders were not happy and continued to breed them down, so the standard now is 3 to 6 lbs, So even your parents pom is oversized.

Look at it this way. Poms that are bred down 3-6 lbs have a higher health risk. Poms, like yours and one or two of mine, are oversized, still loving and happy, stronger bones, and just sturdier all the way around. If you are looking for the Pom personality – you got it. If you are looking for stamina and play – You have that also.
