5 Tips for House Breaking a Pomeranian

Don't make the same mistakes I made with my Pomeranian!

Pomeranians are a very popular breed of toy dogs. There are many reasons for this, in part due to their energetic disposition and cut furry appearance. Pomeranians are an excellent choice for the first time pet owner or someone looking to add an addition on to their family. Pomeranian puppies are easily trained, but like all things, there are exceptions!

The most important thing about house breaking a Pomeranian is to start early and develop a regular training schedule. Pomeranian puppies by nature are clean dogs. As with most puppies, they do not like to go to the bathroom in the same area as where they eat and sleep. This is a huge advantage to us puppy owners!

Puppies develop habits early in life just like we do. One example is where they prefer to go to the bathroom. Watch your puppy long enough when you take him or her out to go to the bathroom and you’ll soon see that they prefer to go in one particular spot or small area. Finding this spot can greatly aid you in house breaking your Pomeranian.

Here are 5 tips to house breaking a Pomeranian puppy.

  • Start by designating a space for the puppy. This will be his or her space where they eat and sleep. It’s like their very own comfort zone. Don’t be surprised if Puppy rejects his or her perfect spot you chose for them. A small area such as a bathroom or Utility Room often works nicely. Later, we can expand this area, but at the beginning, keep it small. Even a large dog carrier will work.
  • Bond with your Pomeranian puppy in their own space. Frolic with them and feed them in their space. Obviously this will also be their eating area also. Do not feed them in any place other than their special area. If you’re gone, this space is where they’ll need confined to. Do not let them wonder around the home unless you’re there.
  • Designate a bathroom area for your puppy. This will be a place you can take them when they need to go, or when they look or act like they need to go. You need to accompany your Pomeranian puppy each time to the bathroom area. Eventually they’ll learn this is where to come to use the bathroom. Each times your puppy uses the bathroom area, give them lots of praise. They’ll soon realize this is a good thing!
  • Put your Puppy on a feeding schedule. Once your Pomeranian puppy is using the toilet area on a regular basis and does not use other areas, such as their special living area or your favorite rug, you can expand their training area to the rest of the home. If they forget and go somewhere other than the toilet area, just give them a scolding and take them immediately to the toilet area. Praise them if they go. Repetition is the key.
  • Avoid using Ammonia. Ammonia is a by product of urine and since dogs have a natural tendency to go where other dogs have went, your Pomeranian may have an uncontrolled urge to go on your hardwood floors you just cleaned.

These 5 tips should help you house break your Pomeranian puppy in a short order. Don’t forget, puppies are individuals and it can take a little longer with some puppies.
